A: Your coaches can help you get your foot in the door, but you can also get the process started without them. Believe it or not, a lot of high school coaches don’t send out much film or help their players be proactive with the recruiting process. At the end of the day, it’s your scholarship and future education on the line, you may have to do a lot of the work to get there yourself.
Get your highlights or gamefilm online yourself and begin to send it out on your own. Start with local schools, state schools and schools within the region. Be sure to send them your Student-Athlete Resume, along with a copy of your upcoming high school or AAU schedule (if available) at the same time.
If coaches like what they see on video and you fit a need that program has for that signing class, the coaches will do more research into you and eventually will come see you in person for themselves. A college coach won’t just show up at your games or school unless they have already done some early research and feel you may be a good fit for their system and team.
Again—be sure you’re contacting the right person from the start and find the direct contact info for your recruiting coach at each school.
